Three "3" - Mobile broadband dongles and deals

Three's network, in a nutshell, is revelutionary. The first network to focus on high speed data and they're serious about it. When Three were first emerging they had a vision and that was that some day mobile broadband will be huge, so they started working on their "3G" capabilities. When they started they had no hardware or basis for a voice network. Early on 3 had an immense 3G coverage but were lacking in other areas. After a spell where Three experimented with using different networks transmitters to carry their voice signal untill eventually they found the perfect combination and to date are one of the cheapest and most reliable mobile broadband providers. Here is a quote from the three website "We have built Britain's best mobile broadband network which already covers 93 percent of the UK population and will reach more than 98 percent in 2009. We are building something scalable that can handle whatever people want to use it for." Indeed!

08 September 2009 - Orange, T-Mobile UK announce merger

(Telecompaper) France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom have entered into exclusive talks to combine their Orange and T-Mobile UK subsidiaries into a 50/50 joint venture. It will be the country's leading operator with about 28.4 million mobile customers, or around 37 percent of the market, based on end-2008 figures. By including Orange's broadband operations, the new company will be able to offer convergent services. On a pro-forma basis, the combined businesses generated approximately GBP 1.7 billion EBITDA on GBP 7.7 billion of revenues in 2008. Under the planned merger, Deutsche Telekom will contribute T-Mobile UK on a cash-free, debt-free basis, including T-Mobile UK's 50 percent holding in its 3G network joint venture with Hutchison and...

13 August 2009 - 3 Group pushes back breakeven target

(Telecompaper) The 3 Group reduced its operating loss (LBIT) to HKD 1.81 billion in the first half, from HKD 5.27 billion a year earlier. The decline was helped by a change in accounting policy to book customer acquisition costs when incurred, rather than amortise the spending over the life of a customer contract. 3 Italia also saw an end to amortisation on its operating licence after it was made indefinite. The mobile operator posted revenues down 18 percent to HKD 26.38 billion, but up 3 percent in local currency. EBITDA before all customer acquisitions costs was down 34 percent to HKD 8.07 billion, hurt by exchange rate effects and forex gains in the year earlier period. Excluding these effects, the figure was up 10 percent...

26 March 2009 - 3 Group targets breakeven EBIT in 2009

(Telecompaper) Hutchison Whampoa's 3 Group targets breakeven EBIT this year, after a loss of HKD 10.86 billion last year. The operating loss narrowed by 39 percent last year, while revenues rose 1 percent to HKD 60.37 billion. Hutchison said all operations showed improved results, apart from 3 Italia. EBITDA excluding customer acquisition and retention costs (CACs) was up 5 percent to HKD 19.34 billion, but CACs rose 18 percent to HKD 20.39 billion. The company said a higher cash flow from operations led to a focus on attracting higher-value customers and the subsequent rise in CACs. The customer base grew 17 percent last year and currently stands at over 20.7 million. The postpaid proportion increased to 55 percent of the total from 47...

26 January 2009 - BT hits the sauce, mulls return to mobile market

Filed under: T-Mobile, MVNOs, Misc, Hutchison 3Maybe we're just way, way off base here, but we're fairly certain the UK mobile market doesn't need yet another competitor that won't offer anything substantially different than what's already out there. According to a new report from The Observer, BT is considering the launch of a mobile phone operation as part of a "joint venture with T-Mobile and 3 in a bid to boost profits by cashing in on the migration of broadband and internet services to mobile devices." Of course, BT has dabbled in hybrid handsets before, but as expected, adoption was remarkably low. Our take? We can't see a washed-up mobile operator being any more successful in today's trying times than it was originally, but hey,...
