26 February 2010 - White space 'Smart City' network goes up in Wilmington, North Carolina

White space internet just took another step on its long, vaporous journey: in addition to the 916-person trial in tiny Claudville, Virginia kicked off last year, Spectrum Bridge just launched its first large-scale "Smart City" network in Wilmington, North Carolina. If you'll recall, white spaces are the bits of spectrum in between TV frequencies, and a whole host of heavy hitters including Microsoft and Google pushed the FCC to open them up for data usage after years of lobbying and comically failed tests. Wilmington was selected for the big trial since it was the first community to switch completely to DTV broadcasting, and the city's using the new network for a variety of infrastructure tasks, including traffic camera monitoring, free...

25 February 2010 - Virgin Media to roll out 100 Mbps service this year

(Telecompaper) UK cable operator Virgin Media will begin rolling out 100 Mbps broadband service by the end of the year, double its current top speed of 50Mbps. Virgin claims the speeds will go 24 times faster than the average speed provided by other ISPs. The company will also extend its 200 Mbps pilot to Coventry where it will seek to recruit hundreds of customers to test the new internet speed. The 200 Mbps pilot, which began in May 2009 in Kent, has been focusing on future technologies and applications, such as home teleconferencing and downloading HD programmes on-demand, which are likely to require fast speeds.

26 January 2010 - Cox demonstrates voice calling, HD video over LTE

(Telecompaper) US cable operator Cox Communications has successfully tested voice calling and high definition video streaming over wireless networks using LTE technology. Cox collaborated with Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei to conduct the trials and test the services and applications. Cox's trials use the AWS and 700 MHz spectrum that it acquired at Federal Communication Commission auctions in 2006 and 2008. Cox spent over USD 550 million for radio spectrum licences to support its mobile plans, which include wireless broadband. Cox conducted the trials in Phoenix and San Diego and chose these markets for the advanced technology-orientation of its residential and business customers, as well as the terrain and suburban density variances of the...

22 December 2009 - US representative wants 50 Mbps for 80% by 2015

(Telecompaper) US representative Rick Boucher said the Federal Communications Commission's broadband plan should promote substantially higher internet speeds and higher capacity networks in order to regain its global top ranking position for high speed broadband service. The representative from Virginia said the FCC should endorse a goal for minimum broadband speeds of at least 50 Mbps downstream and 20 Mbps upstream for 80 percent of the population by 2015.
